The term was coined in the late 1960s. However, it gained significant traction in recent years, following the growth of what\u2019s dubbed as a \u2018design-led\u2019 approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By prioritizing design, companies become inherently customer-centric. This shift in focus, from assumptions to understanding customer needs, is key to success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 10-year study by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/mckinsey-explainers\/what-is-design-thinking\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found design-led companies \u201coutperformed the S&amp;P 500 by 219%.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>\u00a0The Birth of Design Thinking<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nobel Prize laureate and cognitive scientist Herbert A. Simon was the first to mention design thinking as a way of thinking in his book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sciences of the Artificial<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1969). His contributions throughout the 1970s laid the foundations of design thinking and the design thinking process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF) defines design thinking as a \u201cnon-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems, and create innovative solutions to prototype and test.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1991, the company IDEO was founded and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interaction-design.org\/literature\/article\/design-thinking-get-a-quick-overview-of-the-history\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought the design thinking concept to the main mainstream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shortly after, Richard Buchanan published his article \u2018Wicked Problems in Design Thinking.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward to 2004, David Kelly founded the d.school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth mentioning that many of the earlier references to \u2018design thinking\u2019 were in the fields of architecture and engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing design thinking, we must refer to the term \u2018wicked problems,\u2019 coined by design theorist Horst Rittel to describe \u201cmultidimensional and extremely complex\u201d problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interaction-design.org\/literature\/article\/design-thinking-get-a-quick-overview-of-the-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the IxDF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, wicket problems are at the \u201cheart of design thinking\u201d because it is these \u201ccomplex and multidimensional problems that require a collaborative methodology to gain a deep understanding of humans\u2019 needs, motivations, and behavior.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The design thinking process comprises five phases: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps-300x173.png\" alt=\"design thinking process steps\" width=\"397\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps-300x173.png 300w, https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps-1024x591.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps-768x443.png 768w, https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps-18x10.png 18w, https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/design-thinking-steps.png 1300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The 5 Stages of the Design Thinking Process<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step of the designing thinking process is to <\/span><b>Empathize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That is to research users\u2019 needs to understand the problem. Through empathy, designers can set aside their assumptions and zoom in on their users and their needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, it\u2019s time to <\/span><b>Define<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> those needs and problems using the data collected from the first step. Here the team should analyze the data and their observations to determine the core problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is in this stage that a team may create buyer personas to maintain the human-centric approach. Statements or problems that arise from this stage are often referred to as \u2018problem statements.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third step is to <\/span><b>Ideate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and brainstorm. The team needs to think outside the box to uncover solutions to the problem statements from step two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth step is to <\/span><b>Prototype<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an experimental phase where the team seeks to find the best solution to each problem. You may choose to create several versions with different features for your product so you can \u2018Test\u2019 them in the next stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it\u2019s time to <\/span><b>Test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your prototype. However, since design thinking is considered iterative, this may not be your final stage. Design thinking helps with the innovation process, particularly in fast-growing environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using design thinking, teams collaborate to dive deeper into customers\u2019 or users\u2019 needs to create solutions to solve those needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the end goal of using the design thinking process is to get a result that is \u2018desirable, feasible, and viable.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/mckinsey-design\/our-insights\/the-business-value-of-design\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by McKinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found \u201ca strong correlation\u201d between design thinking and business performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies that used design thinking processes were 32% more likely to grow their revenues and 56% more likely to increase the total returns to shareholders. That\u2019s compared to companies that didn\u2019t use design thinking. The research was conducted over a five-year period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey\u2019s research covered three main industries, namely medical technology, consumer goods, and retail banking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on their research, McKinsey noted \u201cthe potential for design-driven growth [to be] enormous in both product- and service-based sectors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One example of design thinking and innovation can be seen with social media platform <\/span><b>Instagram<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2010, the company launched its initial product. But it didn\u2019t stop there. Instagram\u2019s founders focused on the app\u2019s top features, that is image-sharing, likes, and comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They iterated and a few months later launched another version that resulted in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2010\/10\/13\/instagram-users\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100,000 downloads in a week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the course of two months, Instagram nabbed over 2 million users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example is streaming service <\/span><b>Netflix<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Design thinking <\/span><b>fosters innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It helps teams<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.valuwit.com\/en\/improve-internal-communication\/\"> <b>improve their internal communication<\/b><\/a><b>, increases collaboration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and ultimately translates to better results for the product and the whole company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, design thinking should be <\/span><b>part of a company\u2019s corporate culture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When different teams get together to brainstorm, they can <\/span><b>produce more solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ideas to ensure the product meets customers\u2019 needs better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design thinking can help product owners, software engineers, designers, and sales and marketing teams <\/span><b>see problems from different perspectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It also helps different teams get into the customers\u2019 shoes to get a better understanding of the personas and their pain points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By focusing on customers\u2019 needs, the design thinking methodology helps different teams <\/span><b>uncover pain points<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and use them to <\/span><b>improve the product<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their communication with stakeholders and customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of focusing on assumptions, design, product, and tech teams can experiment, brainstorm, and ask questions.
